Imminent Discontinuation of Musical Ramblings

I have decided to decommission Musical Ramblings. Partly because I'm tired of Typepad's old and clunky system which is costing me money each month, and partly because I don't want to have separate blogs for the various things I want to share and talk about. As a consequence, this blog will close in the near future. At that time it will be redirected to my new home on tumblr: 

Analog Impressions

I will be porting some of the content on Musical Ramblings over to Analog Impressions over the next few weeks, and after that I'll be setting up a redirect, but you can already follow my musical ideas (and all sorts of other stuff) over there! 

Sanseverino swings... and rocks!

Sure, it's much more enjoyable when you understand the crazy and hilarious lyrics ("ma position n'est pas facile, agent double et mercenaire / mais elle est moins difficile que celle du missionaire"...) but still, you can get a sense of the exhilaration even if you don't understand French!

Lhasa's voice and talent will be long missed...

I might have posted another version of this beautiful song previously, but I can't be bothered to check. Lhasa de Sela left us last year, and in the plethora of bland or imitative female singers, her absence leaves a great big hole...

Renaud Garcia Fons' Crazy Pulsation

Speaking of Stewart Copeland...

In the early 2000s, Stewart Copeland got himself embroidled in the jam rock scene. A one-off gig with Les Claypool and Trey Anastasio led to a single album from the awesome trio Oysterhead (highly recommended). This is one of tracks from that album.

Bring on the Night...

Police really was one of the most subtle of the early 80s rock bands. I've always found Summers' arpeggios on Bring on the Night stunning. They make the song. 

Corneloup's Freaky Funk...

François Corneloup is a stunning bari sax player. His music is very demanding, often outside of my capacity to grasp, but Next remains accessible thanks to the killer grooves backing him. 

The Groove of Truffaz's Golden Years

Truffaz became famous following his blue note groove releases, but in my opinion his more recent stuff never was as good as these two original albums. Wish that band had kept going...

Insular music: La Météo

I'm just back from a vacation on the Island of Groix in Britanny, and the changing weather reminded me of the beautiful collaboration between Olivier Ker Ourio and Danyel Waro entitled La Météo.
