Of all the musicians I have tried to photograph ever since I seriously started photography, I find pianists the toughest to frame properly. Getting the face, the hands and the keyboard in the same shot is virtually impossible. This photo of Uri Caine is probably my best shot so far, and he's not facing the camera...

Check This Out: Eau Lente

Un des trucs auxquels j'aimerais m'essayer quand j'aurais le matériel adéquat (essentiellement un bon trépied, et peut-être quelques filtres) c'est de photographier des plans d'eau et cours d'eau en exposition lente. Je ne doute pas qu'il s'agisse d'un art qui prend du temps à s'apprendre, mais je trouve certains des résultats magnifiques, comme sur la galerie présentée ici, par le photographe Davidone.

One of the things I'd like to try once I get the adequate gear (mostly a tripod and maybe some specific filters) is to shoot lakes or rivers with a long shutter speed. I don't doubt it's an art that's hard to master, but I find the results superb, as on the gallery presented here, by photograph Davidone.

Abstraction de Fleurs (2009-10-31)

J'aime bien prendre des photos d'objects ou de sujets identiques qui forment de fait une texture par leur répétition. Après les noix de la semaine dernière, ici une autre photo prise au marché aux fleurs d'Amsterdam. Ma femme trouve ces fleurs horribles, mais personnellement j'aime bien la photo!

I like to shoot pictures of identical objects or subjects that form a pattern by repetition. After the nuts last week, here is another photo from the Amsterdam Flower Market. My wife finds these flowers horrible, but I quite like the picture!

Le Retour de Dave Douglas (2009-10-29)

La précédente photo que j'ai postée du concert de Dave Douglas était plutôt décalée, celle-ci est simplement une photo de l'artiste à l'œuvre. Les conditions photographiques au Bimhuis d'Amsterdam étaient plutôt bonnes, même si je n'étais pas idéalement placé pour éviter certains des micros et (forcément) pas mobile.

The previous photo I posted of Dave Douglas' concert was rather quirky, this one is just a photo of the artist performing. The conditions at the Amsterdam Bimuis were very good, even if I wasn't ideally placed to avoid some of the microphones and, as usual, not able to move.

Chanterelles (2009-10-30)

La semaine dernière à Amsterdam nous sommes tombés sur un marché bio sur Nieuwmarkt. Il y avait là un stand de champignons assez étonnant. Les couleurs étaient extraordinaires, et même si je n'ai pas le sentiment d'avoir tout à fait réussi à les capturer, il y a un côté nature morte peinte dans cette photo que j'aime bien.

Last week in Amsterdam we stumpled upon this organic food market on Nieuwmarkt. There was an amazing mushroom stand. The colours were gorgeous, and I don't feel I've quite done them justice, but there's something in this photo that reminds me of painted still lives, so I thought I'd share it.

Canal d'Amsterdam (2009-10-30)

Amsterdam est une ville magnifique que je trouve très difficile à photographier. Les façades sont superbes, mais il y a toujours des intrusions dans le champ, voitures, arbres, péniches. Cette photo ci est - je trouve - pas trop mauvaise. Elle représente le canal qui longe Kloverniersburgwal.

Amsterdam is a beautiful city that I find very hard to shoot well. The façades look great, but there's always something cluttering the view, whether it's cars, trees or boats. This is a photo I find not too shabby of the canal alongside Kloverniersburgwal.

Check This Out: Tenessee Caves

Angelo en Couleurs (2009-10-22)

J'ai déjà mentionné les grandes difficultés à photographier dans certains contextes de concerts où la luminosité est à la fois diffuse et uniforme. En général je suis contraint de passer en noir et blanc en post-traitement, mais ici j'ai réussi (je crois) à désaturer suffisamment les rouges pour que ce portrait d'Angelo Debarre ne soit pas trop surréaliste.

I mentioned already the great difficulty of shooting in certain concert contexts when the lighting is both low and uniform. Usually I can't escape shifting to black & white in post-treatment, but here I managed (I think) to desaturate the reds enough for this portrait of Angelo Debarre not to look too surreal.

Westerkerk Tor (2009-10-31)

J'aime bien photographier les tours et autres clochers. Je trouve qu'il y a une certaine puissance d'évocation dans l'image d'une tour qui transperce le ciel. Ici, le clocher de la Westerkerk d'Amsterdam en contreplongée marquée puisque prise d'un bateau mouche contrebas. Pour d'autre photos de tours, voir la Custom House, Big Ben, la Hancock Tower et la Prudential Tower.

I like to shoot towers. I find there's a strong evocative power in pictures of towers cutting through a skyscape. Here, the Westerkerk tower in Amsterdam in sharp tilt-up since it was taken from a canal boat below. For more tower photos see the Custom House, Big Ben, the Hancock Tower and the Prudential Tower.
